PASSING OF BOARD MEMBER EMERITUS FRANCESCO L. LEGALUPPI

The BIT Center mourns the passing of our dear friend and leader, Francesco Luigi Legaluppi (1967–2025). A lifelong advocate for Italian culture and community, Francesco served as Honorary Consul General of Italy in Baltimore for twenty-five years, founded Italcultura, and guided the Italian Cultural Center of Maryland—today known as The BIT Center—with vision and heart.

To honor his legacy, Francesco’s family has established the Francesco L. Legaluppi Italian Fellowship Endowment Fund at The BIT Center. This Fund will support a 10-month fellowship for Senior High School and College students passionate about Italian art and culture. Through this program, Francesco’s work to build lasting bridges between Maryland and Italy will continue to inspire future generations.

FRANCESCO L. LEGALUPPI OBITUARY

Francesco Luigi Legaluppi

14 Novembre 1967 - 10 settembre 2025.

Message in English to follow:

It is with immense sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Francesco.

He passed away surrounded by his dearest loved ones after a difficult battle with cancer.

He leaves behind his beloved wife Monica; his children Chiara, Matteo, and Francesca; his brother Marco and sister-in-law Crystal; his nieces and nephews Gina with her fiancé Kevin, and Andrew with his wife Caitlin; as well as his aunt Liana and his cousins Francesca and Marina.

He is reunited today with his mother, Luciana Romani, and his father, Marcello Legaluppi, who preceded him beyond earthly life.

Raised between Italy and the United States, he served Italy as the Italian Honorary Consul General in Baltimore for twenty-five years, supporting the Italian community in Maryland before returning to his first passion, the Boy Scouts of America.

Active in politics and various philanthropic organizations, he was the founder of Italcultura from 1985 to 1999, the year in which Italcultura merged with the Circolo Culturale Italiano to create the Italian Cultural Center of Maryland (today The BIT Center) where he was President of the Board from 1999 to 2021.

He leaves an irreplaceable void.

His life will be celebrated in several services in the coming months. Details will be shared as soon as they are available.

In lieu of flowers, to honor his memory, the family has established the Francesco L. Legaluppi Italian Fellowship Endowment Fund at the Italian Cultural Center.

history of the organization

The Bit Center (formerly Italian Cultural Center of Maryland) was founded in 1955 by Professor Regina Levi-Bianchini Soria, Dr. Raffaele Canevaro, and Mrs. Helen Knipp as Circolo Culturale Italiano and incorporated in 1999 joining forces with ItalCultura, founded by Hon. Francesco Luigi Legaluppi.

This decision was made to be more incisive in promoting the contribution of the people of Italy, their descendants, and the immigrant's contribution to Maryland and especially to Baltimore City.

Since 2015 under Monica E. Lapenta leadership, all the community programs were created.

The BIT Community Center Inc. is a 501C(3) charity registered in Maryland,  working every day to build community health and wealth for citizens of the world who call Baltimore home and promoting Italian Culture and Heritage in Maryland.
